The same street, with people who speak your language.

Pick Mandarin, Japanese or Korean. Each has its own neighbours, signs and ways of saying things, written for that language, not translated word for word.

How it works

Learn the words. Then say them to someone.

Learn what to say.

Before each conversation, hear the words you will need, slow or at normal speed, and say them back. The app checks you said them before you go in.

Talk.

Tap the mic and answer. There is more than one right way to say it. If you are not sure, ask them to say it again, or tap for something to try.

See how you did.

After each conversation, see which goals you met, what you said, and how you sounded. Then play it again: each lesson has three versions.

A story, a day at a time

A new day of the story every day you play.

You have just moved in. Day by day you meet the neighbours, find your café, shop at the market and the corner store, and get to know the street.

  • Each day you play, the next day of the story opens, with all its lessons.
  • 17 days in Korean and 10 in Mandarin and Japanese so far, with more on the way.
  • Mandarin starts with its four tones, so you can hear and say them from day 1.
  • Days you have opened stay yours to replay.

Start the free trial when you finish the app's short introduction. Cancel any time in your iPhone's Settings, at least 24 hours before the trial ends, and you will not be charged.

Privacy

No account. No ads.

Nothing to sign up for.

The app doesn't ask for your name, email or contacts. It keeps your progress under an anonymous ID.

The mic is on only when you tap it.

Your recordings are sent to understand what you said and how you sounded, and are not kept by TownTalk.

Transcripts go away.

A short transcript of each conversation is kept for the results screen and deleted after 30 days.

What people ask.

What does it cost?
The first 3 days are free. After that, Town Pass is $9.99 a month for all three languages. Cancel any time in your iPhone's Settings › your name › Subscriptions.
Do I need to know some of the language already?
No. Day 1 starts with hello and goodbye, and each conversation teaches you the words first. If you know some words already, you will move through the early days quickly.
Which phones does it work on?
iPhone.
Which Mandarin, and which characters?
Standard Mainland Mandarin, with simplified characters and pinyin. Japanese comes with rōmaji and Korean with romanization, and you can turn the English and the romanization on or off.
Do I have to speak out loud?
Yes. TownTalk is a speaking game: you answer with your voice. Find a spot where you are happy to talk.
Can I play more than one day of the story a day?
One new day opens each day you play, in total across your languages. You can replay the days you have already opened as often as you like, up to 20 conversations a day.
How do I delete my data?
In the app, open Settings and tap Delete progress. To have everything deleted, email us. See the privacy policy.
